3/29 Weightloss Wednesday: Another Step Closer To My Goal!

3/29 Weightloss Wednesday: Another Step Closer To My Goal!

Here is this week’s Weightloss Wednesday!  It’s been an interesting week as my weight has been up and down but as of this morning I’m at 212 which I will certainly take.  This means I have lost 188 lbs so far and I’m that much closer to my goal of being under 200 lbs.  I’m ready for that to happen!

I also got a kettlebell this weekend and started kettlebell workouts.  And by started I mean I did exactly 1.  I really didn’t know what to expect and while I expected to work out my legs and shoulders, I didn’t expect what it would do to my back.  Holy cow!  I’ve spent the last 3 days unable to bend at the waist.  I’ve probably taken more aspirin this week than in the last year.

However, now that the initial pain has faded, I’m excited about the prospect of starting back up tomorrow.  I really want to see what kettlebell exercises can do for me and how it can change the shape of my body.  Especially since, with almost 200 lbs gone, I look like a sack of potatoes left out in the sun too long with my shirt off.  I really need a little muscle definition in my arms, chest and back to see if I can fill out some of this loose skin.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how things are going.  How are you doing this week?  Let me know in the comments!

3/22 Weightloss Wednesday: Your Health Affects More Than Just You!

3/22 Weightloss Wednesday: Your Health Affects More Than Just You!

It’s time for Weightloss Wednesday!  It’s been a good week as I am down to 214, which means I have lost 186 lbs.  Playing with IF has really allowed me to not only get under 215 but stabilize there.  I figure I’m about 2 weeks away from being under 210, then it’s on to 200!

After last week’s podcast interview with Tracy Reifkind, I have decided to take her SwingLean course and add Kettlebell swings to my workouts.  In fact, I think I’m going to stop doing everything else and just do kettlebell swings for a few months and see what happens.  I just need to get my hands on a kettlebell to get started.

Those of you in the 28 Day Challenge room know that this has been a challenging week for me as my father passed away this weekend.  I loved my father but he reminded me how vitally important it is to take control over your health.  He had the same high blood pressure that I have but never did anything to handle it.  He had a stroke on Friday that incapacitated the left side of his body, followed by a blood clot that traveled to his brain on Saturday.  It all happened so fast I wasn’t able to see him before he died and since his desire was to be cremated immediately, I’ll never see him again.  People, your health is no joke.  Lose the weight, get rid of the T2D, lower the BP, do what you need to do to fix yourself.  Your health affects more than just you.

3/16 Weightloss Wednesday: Time For a New Pair of Pants!

3/16 Weightloss Wednesday: Time For a New Pair of Pants!

It’s time for Weightloss Wednesday!  This has been an interesting week because after a rather massive weight loss of something like 7 lbs last week, everything leveled off and I stabilized at 215 for almost the entire week.  I think this is a good thing because that massive jump I experienced last week was just so bizarre that I think my body wanted to hold on for a bit before continuing to lose.  The good news is that the plateau I was on around 220 is done and now I’m just working on moving from 215 down to 210.  So this means I’m right at 185 lbs lost with my eyes squarely focused on being under 200 lbs by the summer.

An absolutely ridiculous thing happened to me this week that really brought home the changes that have happened in my body.  As I have lost weight, I have been putting off buying new pants until I got under 200 lbs because it just didn’t make sense to me to buy pants that wouldn’t fit for long.  I have just been tightening my belt and going about my business.  Then in the middle of my shift, this happened.

That’s right, the belt broke and I quickly realized the folly of wearing the same pants at 215 lbs that I wore at 300 lbs.  I actually had to buy ribbon and thread it through my beltloops in order to keep my pants up.  So embarrassing to run around work with ribbon on my pants!  The good news is that immediately after work I went up to Walmart and discovered that I had gone from a 44 waist to a 38 which means that for the first time in I don’t know how many decades my waist circumference starts with a 3.  That’s pretty cool!

My wife also went through my jeans drawer and took out all the old jeans to give them away.  It’s pretty amazing that I need to buy a new wardrobe now.  Not that I’m going to do that any time soon but it’s cool to know that I should.

So all in all, another good week and I’m ready to meet my goals!

3/8 Weightloss Wednesday: Plateau? What Plateau?

It’s Weightloss Wednesday!  I gotta say, this is the craziest WLW I’ve had in a while.  I’ll get into exactly what happened below but the facts are that as of this morning, I now weigh 213.6 lbs.  That means I have lost 186.4 lbs but perhaps most importantly, I have lost 8.4 lbs since last week!  After over a month of hovering around 220, the plateau is over!

So how did I do it?  Well last week, I talked about how I was going to commit to doing new things in order to break this long plateau and as I look back over the last year-plus of my journey, I’ve seen that the one thing that breaks my plateaus more than anything else is Intermittent Fasting.  So I actually spoke to one of the IF experts, Dr Nadia Pateguana from Dr Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management Clinic in Toronto.  Our conversation will be in this weekend’s podcast episode but I was able to use the info she gave me to fine tune my approach to IF and the results are amazing!

Essentially what I am doing is not eating at work overnight, then when I get home just going to bed without eating.  Then depending on what time I wake up, sometimes I have a small breakfast, then dinner a few hours later and sometimes it’s just dinner alone.  The first night I did it, I was a little hungry about halfway through my shift but since then, there have been no hunger pains at all.  It just goes to show that those feelings of hunger aren’t driven by what is in your stomach but by what hormones (mainly ghrelin) are in your blood.  If you break the patterns of when you eat, your body doesn’t produce those hunger hormones at set times and you don’t get hungry.

I am so encouraged by these results that I am going to stick with it until I finally reach my goal of being under 200 lbs.  I feel like I have been running an ultra marathon and the finish line is actually in sight!  I said I wanted to reach 210 by the end of March but now I’m thinking bigger.  Can I lose 20 lbs in a single month?  I don’t know for sure but I sure would like to try!

3/2 Weightloss Wednesday: Ready For This Plateau To End!

3/2 Weightloss Wednesday: Ready For This Plateau To End!

It’s time for Weightloss Wednesday!  It’s actually been a disappointing week as I’ve seen my weight creep up from about 218 to 222 this morning.  The good news is that I’m still down 178 lbs so it’s not like I’m 400 lbs again but still…it’s tough emotionally to see the needle creep up instead of down.

Looking back over the week, there were 3 things that were out of the ordinary that may have contributed to the weight gain.  First of all, I stopped intermittent fasting.  I had been not eating during my shift at work but for some reason I found myself getting hungry about half way through and eating a few boiled eggs and cheese.  Nothing terrible but I guess it had a role in my weight gain because I really shouldn’t be hungry.

Secondly, my wife and I got into the habit of eating a little dessert after dinner.  A box of sugar free pudding split 4 ways aver 2 days so it was a small amount and we made a little whipped cream out of HWC and stevia for topping.  While the pudding itself is sugar free the milk it’s made with might have been enough to not only cause an insulin spike but also trigger the hunger that kept me from fasting.  I guess I’ll knock that out this week and see if things change.

And finally, this happened the other night.

Well dinner is ruined. Thanks @redcopperpanadvertising!

It ruined dinner and I had to get take out.  There might have been chips and salsa included in the takeout.  Chips and salsa are essentially my kryptonite.

So what was the culprit?  Who knows but the one thing I’m sure of is they are all going to stop because I’ve been stuck right about here for 5 weeks now and I’m ready to move forward.  My goal right now is to end March under 210.  It will be tough because that’s a lot of weight to lose in a month but I need to set a big goal and work towards it.  I’d rather aim big and fall short than spend another month at 220.
