Combating Food Boredom on the Ketogenic Diet

Food boredom is one of those odd things that come up from time to time in my Facebook Keto support group.  In the interest of full disclosure I have to say that it has never really been an issue with me and if I had to restrict my diet to steak, bacon and eggs, I would be totally fine with that.  The fact that I get to eat that plus a bunch of other stuff makes my dietary life feel very full and varied.

But I know that is not everyone’s experience so I wanted to put together a list of tips for people that are feeling a little food fatigue and want to mix things up a bit.  (Also, just as a side note, I have only heard women complain about food boredom.  If you are a guy and have experienced this, please leave a comment below.  I’d like to find out if this is just a woman thing or more universal.)

Cook

Cooking is the number 1 thing you can do to improve your health, save money and add more variety to your meals.  When you cook, you are in control over what you eat and what it tastes like.  I know cooking doesn’t come easy to everyone but it is definitely a learnable skill  and a skill everyone should have at least a basic level of mastery in.  You don’t have to know how to do scotch eggs or beef Wellington but you should know how to scramble eggs and cook a steak. (Hint: over flame and not too long)

If you would like to put a little time into developing your culinary skills, Youtube is full of helpful videos that will get you started.  I also did a whole podcast on how to be frugal by cooking that you might be interested in.

Spice Things Up

You can change the way your food tastes just by changing the spices you put on your food.  Whenever I cook chicken especially, I always try new spice combos just to see what happens and whether or not I like it.  I put together a list of some of my favorite spices here but you should experiment and see what you like.

Try New Things

Try a new cut of meat or a veggie that you don’t normally eat it.  Try steaming, broiling, roasting, grilling or throwing it a slow cooker and see what happens.  Maybe try eating out at a new restaurant.  In fact I have an ebook with great keto ideas at different restaurants.

Buy a Few Keto Cookbooks

Cookbooks are a great resource for new meal ideas.  They are great to flip through and check out all the ideas that you probably wouldn’t have thought of yourself.  Some of my favorites are anything by Maria Emmerich and Eat Happy by Anna Vocino

Google and Pinterest are Your Friends

Have a cut of meat you don’t know what to do with?  Some strange veggie that you’ve never eaten before?  Just stuck for an idea?  Google it!  Include the words Keto and recipe in the search and you should get a ton of ideas.  Just flip through and find something you like.  Then create a Pinterest board and fill it with the recipes you really enjoyed and before too long, you’ve got your own online cookbook with your favorite meal ideas.
