Eli Lilly just released their results for the Phase 2b trial for their new weight loss drug Bimagrumab in combination with Semaglutide and I have to say, as much as I don’t like the idea of Americans being on yet another pill, these results were very encouraging.
Before I dive in here, I just want to say right off the top that I really do believe the best way to lose weight is by cutting out sugar, refined grains, and seed oils and adding some exercise into your daily routine. Nothing I’m going to say next will change any of that. However, I’m also looking at my country and I have to face facts here, we need help. We are far too fat as a nation.
Having said all that, these new trial results are extremely promising. The knock on previous GLP-1 drugs has always been that you lose a lot of muscle along with fat when you are on them. If you don’t believe me, just Google “Ozempic Face” and look through the celebrities that look like they have had their souls sucked out of their bodies when they go on it.
Most drugs like Ozempic have shown that not only do they make you lose muscle but make it much harder to put on new muscle so even if you have a strenuous muscle building exercise routine, you may not see any results. This may be a factor in why people tend to gain weight so quickly after going off the drugs because larger muscles consume more calories and once you aren’t on the drug anymore, your body just doesn’t have the necessary metabolism to burn fat.
Enter Bimagrumab
If these new results are to be believed, Bimagrumab may be the answer to that problem. A 48 week trial showed that Bimagrumab in conjuntion with Semaglutide not only showed weight loss at the level of Semaglutide alone, it kept 90% of the muscle. That is a very encouraging sign and might mean a very real breakthrough in the way we can lose weight.
There is still a long way to go and several more trials for Eli Lilly to release before we can hang the ole “Mission Accomplished” banner and we have no idea what the cost will be but maybe we are at the beginning stages for a real end to the Obesity Crisis.
