Our What’s Sugar Free at Restaurants series continues!  This week we are looking at Applebee’s.  Applebee’s is one of those restaurants that don’t do a very good job of telling us exactly what ingredients are in their food.  They have a menu, and a Nutrition Information list that allows us to kind of guess at the items that either don’t have added sugar or have a limited amount.

Because of this, the list below is my best guess at the items with no added sugar.  I looked at all the items on the nutritional info list with less than 5 grams of sugar, then just used past experience creating these lists to come up with what I think are the items that are ok to eat if you are avoiding sugar.  However, just to be absolutely clear, I’m not 100% sure about anything on this list because Applebee’s hasn’t given us any of the information we need to be able to determine what we need to know.  Having said all that, the items on this list are very low in sugar so I think it will be alright for out purposes.  Please feel free to share this list with your friends!

Sugar Free Cauliflower Mash Recipe!

Cauliflower mash Pin

There are certain things about the low-carb, sugar-free lifestyle that I miss more than others and mashed potatoes are certainly near the top of that list.  We used to make them about 4 times a week with butter, sour cream, cheese and sometimes bacon and we never had any leftovers to put away.  Of course that didn’t help our runaway weight problems!

When we went sugar free, we just assumed that mashed potatoes, like candy bars and regular Coke, were forever off our list of foods we could have so I was pleasantly surprised when I was skimming through my Instagram feed one day and saw someone eating what looked mashed potatoes but she said it was actually mashed cauliflower.  I was ready to figure out how to do that!  So I went that day and grabbed a head of cauliflower, steamed it up, through it in a food processor and served it up to the family and we all loved it!

My recipe has evolved since that day, I used to put milk in to make it a bit smoother but now I just stick with butter.  I still will sometimes go with a few pieces of bacon crumbled up or just stick with the cheese and garlic.  The point is, you can do whatever you want including just eat it plain.  It’s actually pretty good with just a little bit of salt.

If you decide to make the recipe for your family, please send me a photo and tell me how they liked it, I always like to hear from my readers.  Also, don’t forget to subscribe to the YouTube channel or our daily email to never miss a video.  Enjoy!

Cracked Candy Review!

Cracked Candy Review!

Cracked Candy sent me a few varieties of their candy to review and I loved them!  They are sweetened with Xylitol which has been my favorite sugar substitute since I discovered it a few years ago.  They have a nice mildly sweet flavor and the candy has a unique texture that is somewhat similar to sugar crystal candy.   All 4 flavors are wonderful but I preferred the Orange and Lemon flavors to the Cinnamon and Peppermint but that is obviously subjective.

If you would like to pick up a box for yourself, you can find them at Whole Foods or order them directly from the Cracked Candy Website.

Please watch my video review for more details.

3/2 Weightloss Wednesday: 18 Lbs Down!

3/2 Weightloss Wednesday: 18 Lbs Down!

It’s time for another Weightloss Wednesday check-in!  After spending several days sitting with a family member in the hospital, I was surprised to see that I had gained about 5 pounds eating hospital food and it has taken me all week just re-lose those 5 lbs.  That was a bit disheartening but it reminded me why it is so important to prepare my own food and portion it out like I want because I apparently can’t trust anyone else’s food.

Also, in order to keep challenging myself and get as healthy as I can, I have decided to do 2 things in the month of March that I think will move me closer to my goals.  First, I’ve decided to try to get 5 miles a day in on my bike for 5 days a week.  I’ve done this for the last 2 days and it has become very clear that I’m going to have to invest in a more comfortable bike seat if I’m going to do this.  Secondly, I’m going to cut out my beloved Coke Zero.  I’ve tried to do this a few times over the course of my sugar free journey but it always ends with me obsessively craving it and finally giving in.  Hopefully, this is the time I can pull it off.

All in all, I’m at 282 lbs and feeling good but anxious to see 270-something on the scale.
