On March 27th, 2025 Governor Spencer Cox of Utah signed a bill banning the addition of fluoride to the Utah public drinking water supply with the ban going in to effect on May 7th, 2025.
RFK Backs Taking Fluoride Out of Water Supply
In response, head of HHS, Bobby Kennedy flew out to Utah to champion the bill, explain why he supports it, and hopefully use it as test case for other states to follow suit.
I have been looking at the data concerning fluoride for a few months now and find it really interesting. As always, I am not a doctor, nothing I say should be taken as medical advice and you should do your own research but the data is fascinating.
Loss of IQ
According to a meta study on the effects of fluoride on IQ for every 1 mg/L increase in urinary fluoride, there is a decrease of 1.63 IQ points in children. That is a stunning number. For comparison, experts estimate that lead exposure has on average led to a reduction of 2.6 IQ points per person as of 2015.
So if those numbers are correct, lead was only responsible for the loss of 1 IQ point more than fluoride and that was a big enough problem to totally transform the gas that went into our cars, the paints we used for our homes and several other products being changed.
No one would argue that getting rid of lead was a net positive for society and Fluoride is what seems to have close to the same effect.
Neurological Issues
Another study showed increased fluoride toxicity impacted neurological development in children, perhaps being a large driver of ADD and ADHD. ADHD diagnoses have risen for years in the US to the point where
I doubt there is a classroom in America without a kid with the diagnosis and on medication to control it.
Liver and Kidney Health
Another study showed high levels of fluoride can have adverse effects on kidney and liver function.
I have to admit these effects have not been studied very well and probably require greater research but it is at least a signal that more work needs to be done.
RFK’s Press Conference
Fluoride was initially added to our water to increase dental health but in the modern age of tooth paste and fluoridated mouth washes, it no longer seems to be necessary.
We can all take responsibility for our own teeth while removing something that seems to cause systematic harm to the community.
For what it’s worth, we have switched over to Tom’s of Maine Fluoride Free toothpaste for a while now and have seen no reduction in dental health.
Of course, we also don’t eat carbs or sugar which is what is probably driving most tooth decay in the world today.
If you would like to read a book that goes over the effects of a modern vs ancestral diet specifically on dental health, I recommend Weston A Price’s book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.
